West Country charity supporting survivors of sexual violence struggling to cope with demand
SARSAS says the number of people becoming victims in Avon and Somerset is "sad" and "shocking"
West Country charity Somerset & Avon Rape and Sexual Abuse Support (SARSAS), which supports survivors of sexual violence is asking for more donations, saying it is struggling to cope with demand.
The charity, which operates across the Bristol and Bath areas as well as wider Somerset, says on average it is receiving 27 referrals for counselling sessions every week. It comes as the latest figures from Avon and Somerset Police show on average four people a day are becoming victims of sexual offences.
Tracey Lee, head of communications at SARSAS said: "The reality is we are incredibly busy at the moment...
"Unfortunately this demand for our services is greater than the sustainable funding that we're receiving.
"We receive about 1,300 referrals every year for our support, which is a huge number."
The charity is projecting it will give 5,000 counselling sessions by March 2025, having given around 4,000 last year.
"The demand for our services has and does continue to increase," Tracey said.
SARSAS Chief Executive Lorri Weaving said: "We know that the true number of people who have been affected by rape or sexual abuse is much higher than this as the majority of people will never report what has happened to then for fear of judgment or disbelief.
"We are there for everyone, no matter when or how it happened, how long ago or whether they reported to the police.”
The charity specialises in supporting survivors who have endured multiple traumas and often face significant challenges, including flashbacks, panic attacks, and suicidal thoughts.
The charity has set up a JustGiving page for anyone who would like to donate to their cause.
