Former rugby league player Kevin Sinfield will run all the way from Gloucester to Bristol on Monday (2 December).

The event is part of his week-long “Running Home for Christmas” challenge which will see him run over 50km (31 miles) each day in seven parts of the UK.

It is his fifth annual fundraising challenge for people who have been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease – like his friend and former team-mate Rob Burrow who passed away from the condition in June.

The West Country leg will kick off at 7am at Kingsholm Stadium in Gloucester where Sinfield will meet former Gloucester rugby player Ed Slater, who was diagnosed with MND in 2022.

He will then meet former Bristol Rovers striker Marcus Stewart, who has also been living with the condition since 2022, as well as Gloucestershire cricketer David “Syd” Lawrence, who was diagnosed with MND this year, at the Memorial Ground at approximately 2.37pm.

Sinfield said: “It has been wonderful to see the support that the people of Gloucester and Bristol have given to Ed, Syd and Marcus since their own diagnosis”.

He is set to finish his run just after 3.30pm at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol.

Members of the public are invited to cheer on Sinfield and give him and his team a warm welcome from the stadium’s Lansdown Stand.

The route is broken down into blocks of 7km which Kevin Sinfield is aiming to complete within one hour before setting off to run the next seven.

The number 7 plays a crucial part in Sinfield’s challenges, as it was Burrow’s shirt number during their joint career at Leeds Rhinos.

Donations will go towards the MND Association, which operates across the whole country, as well as five further MND charities.

“We have seen over the last four challenges how much this country cares for the MND community and we must continue to give all those impacted by this disease the hope to carry on”, he said.

So far, Kevin Sinfield’s challenges have raised almost £10 million for the MND community.
