Avon and Somerset Police have referred themselves to the policing watchdog, the IOPC - following the death of a woman in Portishead.

Emergency services were called Tansy Lane around lunchtime on Tuesday (27th June) to reports of a woman in her 60's being seriously injured.

The woman died at the scene, despite the best efforts of paramedics and police.

Avon and Somerset Police say they've made a "mandatory" referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct - due to "prior police contact".

A forensic post-mortem and formal identification of the woman is to take place in due course.

We're told people living nearby can expect an increased police presence in the coming days.

Neighbourhood Policing Chief Inspector Adam O'Loughlin said "“Our collective thoughts are with the victim’s friends and family in what is undoubtedly a very difficult time. "

"We understand this can be an incredibly shocking and upsetting time for many people and we thank the local community for their understanding while the scene is in place."

"While we believe this is an isolated incident, there will be increased police presence in the area over the coming days."

A 39-year-old man, who has been arrested in connection with the death, remains in custody at this time
