Plans in place to stop unrest in the West Country
Avon and Somerset Police have warned those thinking of getting involved in violent disorder
More jail terms are expected to be handed out today (16 August), following violence stemming from the Southport stabbings.
That includes two women from Bristol who pleaded guilty to violent disorder yesterday (15 August).
Elly-Jayne Cox, 33, of Bishopsworth, Bristol, and Lisa Bishop, 38, of Lawrence Weston, Bristol, appeared before Bristol Magistrates’ Court.
They will both be sentenced later today.
"think again"
Avon and Somerset Police have since said they will be meeting with faith leaders across the region to make sure the community feels safe.
Somerset Commander Superintendent Lisa Simpson says they will act swiftly if anyone continues to behave in a shameful way.
In a statement she said: "The courts have shown very clearly that anyone involved in violent unrest faces a lengthy jail term.
"We in policing are committed to acting swiftly to bring before the court anyone who behaves in such a shameful way. I hope this reassures our communities – and makes anyone thinking of coming to our town to cause trouble to think again.”
It comes as the force have put plans in place should any more disorder take place.
A spokesperson said: " We have resources on hand to facilitate lawful protest, and to take decisive action should there be any disorder. We will not tolerate hate, violence or criminality.
"Neighbourhood officers are working with partner agencies and are in touch with community and faith leaders and local businesses.
"As well as telling them what we know so they can make informed decisions, we’re asking them to pass on anything which makes them feel less safe."
