Man found guilty over three fly-tipping offences in Bristol

A man has been found guilty of three fly tipping offences in Bristol.
Jonathan Ogden, the director of Smarty Dry Cleaners in the city has been ordered to pay more than £2000 following the hearing at Bristol Magistrates Court on August 7.
It's after city council enforcement officers found piles of waste three times on the junction of Redcliff Hill and Guinea Street whilst carrying out routine patrols.
A search through the waste showed evidence linking it to Smarty Dry Cleaners, with further investigations proving that the waste had been left there by the company.
The court ordered Jonathan Ogden, to pay a fine of £350 for each of the three offences, costs of £1,000 and a victim surcharge of £105 – a total of £2,155.
Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “This successful prosecution should act as a warning to individuals and businesses that do not dispose of their waste properly. Fly-tipping causes disruption and is unsightly on our streets.
"We know people care passionately about keeping Bristol tidy and we are working to educate everyone on their responsibility in helping us to keep our streets litter free.”
Fly-tipping is a criminal offence under the 1990 Environmental Protection Act.
Bristol City Council say it is a persistent issue across the region.
It can lead to fines of up to £50,000 and up to five years imprisonment.
The Big Tidy launched in October 2019 and aims to bring the sparkle back to the city by working hand-in-hand with residents and Bristol Waste street cleansing crews. Since 2019 over 800 fly tips have been cleared, more than 1,800 streets have been cleaned and over 11,000 graffiti tags removed.
