Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed the man who was arrested last week after forcing the temporary lockdown of a primary school and Bath's Royal United Hospital has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

In an update, Avon and Somerset Police said: “A man in his 40s was arrested on Friday afternoon after threats were reportedly made by phone to staff at Royal United Hospital in Bath earlier that day.

“He has since been detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983.

“Shortly after those threats were made, we received a single report of an unknown man carrying an unknown item within the vicinity of the hospital. We are now satisfied that it was not a bladed weapon but that report to police was made with good faith.”
