A man’s been charged for allegedly riding an e-scooter on the hard shoulder of the M5.

Jamal Rabeh, 29, has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without insurance and being a learner driver on the motorway.

It’s after police posted a video of the alleged incident on social media yesterday, saying: “This rider was stopping riding their privately owner E-Scooter on the motorway at 3am whilst twice the drink drive limit.”

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: “A 29-year-old man has been charged in connection with an incident in which officers stopped an e-scooter being ridden on the motorway.

“Jamal Rabeh, of Stanley Close, Staplegrove, was charged in the early hours of this morning with driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving without insurance and being a learner driver on a motorway.

“The charges come after officers attended the M5 northbound between Junction 25 (Taunton) and Junction 24 (Bridgwater) at around 3am today (Friday 29 December).

“Rabeh was bailed and will appear at Taunton Deane Magistrates' Court on Thursday 18 January 2024.”

It comes as Avon and Somerset Police continue their anti drink-drive campaign Operation Tonic over the festive period.
