M5 closed in both directions after serious crash

A major accident has led to the closure of the M5 in Somerset, halting traffic in both directions.

The incident occurred around 10:30am between the Bridgwater North and South junctions.

National Highways has labelled the incident as "serious", with all emergency services currently responding.

In a statement, National Highways said: "Traffic is currently stopped on the #M5 in both directions between J23 #BridgwaterNorth and J24 #BridgwaterSouth due to a serious collision. All emergency services are en route, and National Highways traffic officers are assisting with road closures."

They later added: "The #M5 is now closed southbound between J23 #Dunball and J24 #Bridgwater. Avon and Somerset emergency services are on the scene, and traffic is still held on the northbound side to allow the Air Ambulance to land."
