M49 in Bristol reopens after "welfare incident"

Officers have thanked members of the public for their support at the scene

Traffic on the M49 in Bristol is starting to ease this afternoon after the road reopened.

Police say the southbound route was closed at around 10.20am due to a welfare incident - it's been confirmed that person is now safe.

In a statement Avon & Somerset Police said: "Emergency services are at the scene of a concern for welfare incident which has closed the M49 southbound and the M5 sliproad at junction 18 southbound."

"Officers were alerted by a member of the public just before 10am today, Thursday 25 July.

"The person is now safe and the road is due to reopen shortly after 11.30am.

"We’re very grateful to support from members of the public at the scene."
