Inquest to establish cause of women's death after Grand Pier incident
Its emerged a woman died shortly after being hit by an advertising board on the pier in Weston Super Mare
An inquest is set to establish whether an incident on Weston Super Mare's Grand Pier earlier this year, caused the death of a woman.
Avon and Somerset Police were called to the pier on October 28 to help the ambulance service after a woman was reportedly hit by an advertising board.
She was taken to hospital where she passed away.
At the moment it is not entirely clear whether what happened caused her death, but the inquest will look at all the facts.
North Somerset Council say they are investigating but the Health and Safety Executive is not involved.
"We can confirm that initial investigations have indicated that the injuries sustained by the lady were related to the incident," a council spokesperson told us in a statement.
"The coroner will hold an inquest to determine the circumstances surrounding the death after considering all evidence and witness statements.
"We are making good progress with our investigations but cannot at this stage say how long they will take to conclude, however we are directing additional resources to the matter to bring it to a conclusion as swiftly as possible."
Avon and Somerset Police say their thoughts are with the woman's family.
The inquest is due to go ahead next year.
Speaking to another media outlet the pier's owners said they will not comment until they have seen the coroners report.
