Highly rated new film on dementia to screen in Bristol
"Grey Matter" has been created in partnership with Bristol charity BRACE Dementia Research
A new film about the challenges and triumphs of living with Alzheimers is being screened in the West Country this week, in partnership with a Bristol charity.
Grey Matter stars Stephanie Beacham (Dynasty) in the lead role alongside Eloise Smyth (Harlots) also featuring Harry Kirton and Nigel Boyle (both Peaky Blinders).
It follows the story of teenage granddaughter Chloe (played by Eloise), who decides to give her nan Peg (played by Stephanie), one final unforgettable summer after she is diagnosed with the disease.
The film has been created in partnership with the Bristol based charity BRACE Dementia Research, which funds studies at the Universities of Bath and the West of England, with some of the money raised set to go towards its efforts.
the partnership came about after Stephanie's own father was diagnosed with the disease.
“Having witnessed my father’s descent into Alzheimer’s, this film is very personal to me," she said.
“It's one in two of us who will be affected by dementia, and last year it was the leading fatal disease in the UK over anything else.
"We need to change that, and that can only be done through more research."
Chris Williams, chief executive of BRACE, said they are "delighted" with the partnership.
"BRACE welcomes Stephanie’s support to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s and dementia; and the charity’s mission to find a cure for dementia.”
the film premiered at the Female Eye Film Festival in Canada last July, where it won the award for Best Foreign Debut.
It had its US premiere at the Naples International Film Festival where it received rave reviews and premiered in the UK at London Film Week on 10 December.
It currently has a rating of 8.3 out of 10 on popular film website IMDb.
It is available to view this week at Scott Cinemas in Westbury Park on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
