Food banks expect to be busier than usual today after closing yesterday
Food banks in our region say they need support
Last updated 20th Sep 2022
Food banks across the region expect to be busier today as a result of being closed yesterday - or only open for 'emergencies'.
Along with shops and many other sectors, charities gave staff and volunteers the day off to reflect on the passing of her Majesty and watch her funeral.
Some food bank services closed, others offered what they called an 'emergency service'.
Ann Chinye is captain of the Shepton Mallet food bank, which is run by The Salvation Army
Councillor David Cox is from the Homeless in Teignbridge Support food bank - or HITS as it's known.
He's urging people - who can - to donate the £400-pound energy bill help they're getting from Government, for example if they get the rebate for a second holiday home.
Cllr Cox said: "Every homeowner is set to start receiving a £400 energy rebate from October as part of the energy bills support scheme.
"Those with empty second holiday homes will receive the rebate twice.
"HITS is urging second homeowners to donate part or all of their rebate to support HITS help families struggling to pay fuel bills this winter."
Trustee, Trish Kirkby said: "We are seeing more demand for our services and most of our clients are in some form of employment, we are working with other voluntary and community group to help families through, what is looking like a bleak winter."
Over the weekend, food confiscated from people waiting in the queue for the Queen's lying in state was donated to charity.
People were not allowed to take food or drink inside the Palace of Westminster and any such items will be confiscated.
Charity The Felix Project said it expected to collect over two tonnes of food, mostly snacks including crisps, chocolate and biscuits, and is also accepting unwanted blankets.
With people waiting up to 24 hours to complete the five-mile walk from Southwark Park to Westminster Hall to pay their respects to the Queen, many were coming with plenty of food to keep them going.
