Bristol could gain a fifth MP under plans to shake up the constituencies across the country.

The Boundary Commission, which looks into where constituencies should start and end, has published a review ahead of the next General Election in 2024.

It comes as new rules dictate each constituency must have an electorate no smaller than 69,724 and no larger than 77,062.

Currently both Bristol South and Bristol West exceed that limit.

Under the proposals the current four constituencies of Bristol West, Bristol North West, Bristol East and Bristol South, will become five in Bristol Central, Bristol North West, Bristol North East, Bristol East and Bristol South.

Bristol West will essentially be renamed as Bristol Central, though the wards of Lawrence Hill and Easton that currently form part of it, would go to Bristol East.

Knowle from the existing Bristol South constituency would also go to Bristol East, while the new Bristol North East seat would get Frome Vale, Eastville and Hillfields from the current Bristol East, plus Lockleaze from the current Bristol North West constituency.

South Gloucestershire wards New Cheltenham, Kingswood, Woodstock and Stape Hill & Mangotsfield would also go to to the Bristol North East constituency.

Apart from Knowle to Bristol East, the Bristol South constituency would stay the same.
