A teenager is critically ill in hospital having been stabbed with a machete, a court heard.
The 16-year-old, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was hurt in an alleged incident in a McDonald's restaurant in Bristol city centre on the evening of February 8.
Joel Binnings, 19, appeared before Bristol Magistrates' Court charged with attempted murder and possessing a knife, namely a machete, in public.
Jane Cooper, prosecuting, told the hearing that after the incident on the first floor of the restaurant in The Horsefair, the alleged attacker left the scene.
After public appeals, Binnings, of Fishponds, Bristol, handed himself into police.
District Judge Nicholas Wattam remanded the defendant into custody after rejecting an application for bail.
Addressing Binnings, the judge said: "You case is to go to the crown court for trial. Your next date is March 18 and that will be a date for case management.
"You will be remanded into custody."
Avon and Somerset Police said two men aged 18 and 19, previously arrested in connection with the incident, are on conditional police bail, and a 13-year-old boy has been released without charge.
