Clifton Suspension Bridge will be closed for much of today (July 4), as they carry out essential inspection work - and upgrade the toll payment system.

It'll stay at ÂŁ1, but is moving to only accept cards instead of change.

They say the state-of-the-art toll system will make it quicker and easier for drivers to cross the bridge.

Officials from the bridge say the road will be closed to all traffic and cyclists between 09:30 and 15:30, with a diversion route through Bridge Valley Road, Brunel Way and Beggar Bush Lane in place instead.

Motorists are urged to allow extra time today and tomorrow, as there'll also be only one lane in use going in each direction when the bridge reopens until 20:00 on July 5.

Whilst the bridge is closed, experts will also be repairing the stonework on the Grade 1 listed toll house.

Trish Johnson, Bridge Master, said: “Our state-of-the-art new toll system will make it quicker and easier for drivers to cross the bridge and reflects the move to card-only for many services since the pandemic.

“This change is part of major programme of repairs and maintenance to the bridge over the last few years to make sure this iconic bridge remains fit for the future.”

Orbility will be supplying the new card payment barrier tolling solution. Jim Short, UK Sales Director said: “As a local resident and frequent user of the bridge, we are thrilled to have secured this important project and further build on our presence in Bristol and our existing parking solutions deployed at Bristol Airport, Bristol City Council and Millennium Square.

“We are excited to see our solutions installed at such an important and historic landmark and look forward to working with the bridge team.”

Trish continued: “We will need to close the bridge for one day to install the new tolling system. During the bridge closure pedestrians will still be able to use the bridge, using one of the footways but there will be no access for vehicles, and cycling will be prohibited. Cyclists may dismount and walk across the bridge, but due to the narrow footways, are requested to avoid using the bridge if possible.

“Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust wishes to apologise for the inconvenience which this closure will cause. We will still be operating with one lane open in peak hours but delays may be expected.”

If you can't pay by card, you can purchase a Bridge Card, which you can find out more about here.
