Clifton Suspension Bridge closure over Fiesta Weekend
Bristol’s International Balloon Fiesta returns on the 11 – 14 August
Clifton Suspension Bridge will be closed during some of the popular Balloon Fiesta.
Bristol’s International Balloon Fiesta returns on the 11 – 14 August. The Bridge Master of the Clifton Suspension Bridge has confirmed that the bridge will be closed for some of the celebrations.
The historical city landmark will be closed to pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles for two evenings during the popular summer fiesta, which is the largest of its kind in Europe.
The infamous bridge was built 1754 and took 33 years to complete. Trish Johnson, Bridge Master of the Suspension Bridge says, "We have agreed with the event organisers that to ensure the safety of the public and the bridge, the bridge should be closed for the Thursday and Saturday evenings.
"While it is safe for its normal use and volume of traffic – both vehicular and pedestrian – the Victorian bridge is old and must be treated with respect."
Isambard Kingdom Brunel called the Bridge, "my child, my darling", so he would probably agree with the Bridge Master!
Organisers are urging balloon fiesta attendees to plan ahead of their journeys on the weekend of the fiesta as the bridge will be closed from 6pm till midnight all weekend.
Trish Johnson says, "The Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by these bridge closures."
