Bristol University Hall put in lockdown after 40 positive cases
There are 257 positive cases across the University on the whole including three staff members
Every student living in the University of Bristol's Courtrooms Hall has been told to self isolate after an outbreak of coronavirus.
Forty students there have tested positive - it means 300 now have to lock themselves away for two weeks.
The University announced the news today (09/10) in a series of tweets.
They say the decision has been taken based on advice from Public Health England and full 24 hour support is being offered to those affected.
"This includes calls with students to keep them up to date, food, other supplies and clean laundry deliveries direct to their doors," one of their tweets reads.
They add that their campuses remain open.
Professor Sarah Purdy, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Student Experience, said: “The health and safety of our students is a top priority at this very difficult and challenging time.
“We have been actively monitoring coronavirus case numbers across the University community throughout the pandemic and have implemented a range of planned, increasing measures to reduce the risk of the virus spreading.
"This has included the self-isolation of a number of living circles within our residences.
“Having reassessed case numbers with colleagues from the Public Health Team today, we have decided that further measures are appropriate at this stage. "
She added that the University knows this is a "stressful" time.
“All affected students will continue to access online teaching if they’re well enough."
Across the whole University there are currently 254 students who have tested positive and three members of staff.
That's out of a total of 28,000 and 7,000 respectively.
