Bristol University re-introduces mandatory face masks on campus
The precautionary measure will come into effect immediately
The University of Bristol has re-introduced mandatory masks in campus buildings as a precautionary measure.
Students and staff were sent an email this morning announcing the new regulations which are set to come into place as soon as possible.
Everyone will be expected to wear a face covering while inside unless they are exempt, eating or drinking or 'can keep a reasonable distance from each other'.
A University of Bristol spokesperson said: "Students have made it very clear how much they value their in-person on-campus teaching. By acting now, we will increase the likelihood that we can continue this key element of the Bristol experience during the difficult winter months ahead."
The University said bringing back masks will protect everyone on campus and allow in-person teaching to continue during the, as the city marks high Covid infection rates.
As of today (16th November), there are 25 active cases of Covid amongst students and a number of positive cases circulating amongst staff, according to the University's website.
Bristol University lecturer Dr Alix Dietzel said she is "relieved" to hear mandatory face masks are re-introduced on campus. She tweeted:
What should students and staff do if they have symptoms or have to self-isolate?
The University advises students or staff who:
- have symptoms of Covid-19
- have received a positive test result or
- who are required to self-isolate for another reason
to give notice immediately to help minimise the risk to others and keep everyone safe.
Students and staff can report any of that information by using self-reporting coronavirus forms that can be found on the University's website.
