Bristol's Mayor - Marvin Rees - alongside South Gloucestershire Councillor, Leigh Ingham, have lost out on their bids to stand for Labour at the next General Election in Bristol North East.

The seat has been re-established in the city, following a review by the Boundary Commission earlier this year.

Historically, the seat has seen a number of parties represent the region, with the Labour Co-Operative, Conservative & National Liberal, Labour, and Conservative groups all spending time in the seat before it was abolished in 1983.

Instead, the mayor of Lewisham, Damien Egan, has been selected to represent the party at following a final hustings event earlier today (July 30) at the Bristol Metropolitan Academy in Fishponds.

At the event, hundreds of party members got the chance to vote on who they'd prefer to stand for them in the new sear for the city.

In a statement on social media, Damien Egan said: "Thank you Bristol North East Labour members for selecting me to be your parliamentary candidate.

"To represent Labour in the area I’m from, know and love is the greatest honour and I’m looking forward to getting on the doorstep to campaign across our new constituency."

Marvin Rees said: "It's an honour to serve as the elected Mayor of my home city – and we're working hard to keep #DeliveringForBristol.

"Look forward to campaigning for Damien Egan in Bristol North East over coming months, to help win the seat and deliver a Labour Government."

Kingswood Councillor Leigh Ingham said: "Well that’s been a busy few weeks!

"Looking forward to campaigning for a Labour win in BNE with Damien Egan"

We are yet to find out the names of the other candidates declared for this seat for the 2024 General Election.

These will be announced in due course.

Until then, the seat will not officially exist until the next time the voters go the polls, which is expected to be in 2024.
