Bristol baker gets through to Great British Bake Off final
Giuseppe Dell’Anno is the South West’s first Bake Off star to be a finalist on the show
Bristol’s Giuseppe Dell’Anno will battle it out for the winning title of the Great British Bake Off against Chigs Parmar and Crystelle Pereira next week.
Fan-favourite Jurgen Krauss was sent home from the semi-final despite coming first in the technical challenge. But in the signature challenge he was the only one, out of the four semi-finalists not to receive a handshake off Paul Hollywood, after his ‘Murder at the Opera’ bakes.
As part of Patisserie Week, the contestants had to bake eight patisserie style layered slices for their signature challenge. Giuseppe made Tiramisu Slices and even received one of Paul Hollywood’s famous handshakes.
For the technical challenge the semi-finalists had to bake a Sablé Breton tart. With Jurgen’s bake coming first, Giuseppe’s came second, Crystelle’s came third and Chig’s came fourth.
But to end this year’s semi-final the judges gave the four the challenge of baking entremets for their showstopper. The Bristol mechanical engineer reflected his Italian roots by making his own ‘Leaning Tower of Pisa’. When looking at his finished piece Giuseppe said: “I think I’ve managed to make the leaning tower wonkier than it is.”
All three of this year’s finalists have been crowned star baker twice. Giuseppe has also been one of the judges’ favourite bakers five times, more than any of the other contestants this season.
Fans have tweeted their support for the first Bristol finalist.
Briony May Williams, was the Bristol contestant who made the shows semi-final in 2018.
After watching the show this year and ‘fangirling’ when she met Jurgen, she reflected on the pressure of being a semi-finalist: “It had all gone ok, up until the showstopper, then everything just went so wrong. I could almost see myself unfolding, mentally, physically I had a chest infection, I was really poorly the weekend of the semi-finals because you just give everything to the show, willingly, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
You can watch the Great British Bake Off Final on Tuesday 23rd November at 8pm on Channel 4.
