Huddersfield MP believes tier 3 restrictions in Kirklees 'inevitable'
Barry Sheerman believes the government is posed to impose harsher rules 'quite soon'.
Tougher Covid restrictions taking Kirklees into Tier 3 are “inevitable” according to Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman.
And he believes the Government is poised to impose harsher new rules on the borough “quite soon”.
Speaking in advance of a key meeting last night (27/10) Mr Sheerman said: “Covid is rampant. Rates are going up. Hospitals are under pressure locally and nationally.
“I think they are going to put us in the next tier quite soon. It’s inevitable.”
Kirklees is among five local authority areas within West Yorkshire – along with Bradford, Calderdale, Leeds and Wakefield – that are presently under Tier 2 restrictions.
That means people are banned from meeting anyone with whom they don’t live or who are not in their support bubble.
But rising infection rates from coronavirus have prompted suggestions that the county could be moved into Tier 3.
That would ban households from mixing in both indoor and outdoor private settings as well as forcing the closure of pubs and bars that do not serve food considered ‘a substantial meal’.
Yorkshire has now exceeded 100,000 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began.
And this week South Yorkshire began its first full week of Tier 3 lockdown rules.
The latest data on infections and hospital admissions in West Yorkshire shows a continued rise. Council leaders have repeated calls to Government “that further local action needs to be taken, including strengthening community engagement and test and trace”.
