Scottish Borders Council has today (Thursday) approved a ten per cent hike in council tax.

That's despite a member of the local authority's ruling administration speaking out against the move.

Conservative councillor Julie Pirone says more than half of those who responded to a council survey objected to the rise.

The local authority insists it still has some of the lowest council tax charges in Scotland.

Councillor Euan Jardine, Leader of Scottish Borders Council, said: “This budget sets out a series of actions which will help secure the future of our communities.

“The 10 per cent increase in Council Tax was an extremely difficult decision, but ultimately members across the political spectrum agreed it was necessary to protect frontline services and make investing in communities a priority.”
