Train services on the East Coast Main Line between Edinburgh and Newcastle are at a standstill this afternoon.

It follows reports of a train "hitting an obstruction on the line" between Berwick and Alnmouth.

Passengers on the two o'clock LNER service between Edinburgh Waverley and London's King's Cross have been held up by the incident.

The train operator says it hopes to get the service on the move again soon.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "There are currently delays on the East Coast Mainline due to a southbound train developing a fault.

"Engineers are on-site working on the train and we’ll get services back on the move as soon as possible.

"(A) train is stopped just south of Berwick (Upon-Tweed) and has been there since around 3pm."
