A 47-year-old man has been arrested after the van he was driving was involved in a collision with a car on the A68 south of Jedburgh.

A 14-year-old boy - who was a front seat passenger in the other vehicle - suffered serious injuries in the smash, and has been taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Two other children - an 11-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl, who were back seat passengers in the black Volkswagen Sharan - were taken to Borders General Hospital, along with the drivers of both vehicles.

A 47-year-old woman behind the wheel of the car was among the casualties.

The incident unfolded on the cross-border route, near Camptown, around 4.20pm on Sunday.

And the road was closed for more than four hours while road traffic investigators examined the scene and the wreckage was cleared.

Officers say the driver of the red Transit van has been arrested in connection with a road traffic offence and a report, detailing the circumstances, will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Sergeant Lee Walkingshaw, from Police Scotland, said: “Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and we urge anyone with information or dashcam footage to get in touch.

“We would also be keen to speak to two unidentified people who stopped to give assistance at the scene but left prior to police arriving.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting reference 2271 of June 30th.”
