Earlier this year, it emerged that global sandwich chain Subway is exploring a possible sale of the business after almost six decades of family ownership.

The firm has been growing rapidly for years but is now facing soaring costs and increased competition.

However, it still came as a shock when its two outlets in the Scottish Borders closed suddenly.

Mail has begun to stack up behind the door of its branch in Channel Street, Galashiels; while the kiosk at the Shell petrol station in Jedburgh is providing an alternative choice of bread and fillings.

According to its website, Subway is an American multi-national fast food restaurant franchise that specializes in submarine sandwiches, wraps, salads and drinks.

We contacted the company for an update.

In reply, a spokesperson said: "We can confirm that the Subway store located on 4 Edinburgh Road, Jedburgh, has closed.

"The store on 91-93 Channel St, Galashiels is temporarily closed. We do not currently have a reopen date but guests can still enjoy their favourite subs, salads and wraps at their nearest Subway store at Unit 6B Straiton Retail Park Unit 6, Edinburgh EH20 9PW."
