Fisherman rescued from rocks at St Abbs - as lifeboat station mourns 'true gentleman'
Last updated 15th Jan 2025
A fisherman has escaped "cold but unhurt" after being rescued from the rocks below St Abbs lighthouse.
The local lifeboat crew guided coastguard teams from Eyemouth and Berwick to the casualty.
However, the challenging conditions meant they were unable to deploy their rope safety equipment.
A Coastguard helicopter was requested as backup.
But, a plan was hatched and the independent lifeboat team were able to extract the fisherman by sea, and return him safely to St Abbs harbour.

The alarm was raised just before 6.30pm on Sunday.
It comes as the station mourns the loss of crew member Alistair Crowe, who dedicated 60 years of his life to saving lives at sea.
He's being described as a "true gentleman" and "one of a kind", while Berwickshire councillor James Anderson says he'll be "a huge miss".
A spokesperson for Berwick Coastguard said: "Fortunately, St Abbs Lifeboat was able to carefully navigate the rocks and get a crew member ashore to assist the casualty.
"After assessing the situation, it was confirmed that the casualty was not injured.
"A plan was put in place to safely transfer them onto the lifeboat and return them to St Abbs Harbour."
