A section of Spittal promenade has been sealed off this afternoon (Tuesday) as emergency services responded to an incident on the neighbouring beach.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service was also called out, along with police and coastguard teams, after the alarm was raised just before 3pm.

It follows a report of concern for a person.

The helicopter, which landed at Sandbanks, departed around 4.30pm.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Just before 3pm today (Tuesday), we received a report via the ambulance service of a concern for the welfare of a person near Spittal Beach in Berwick.

“Emergency services are currently in attendance.”
