Dog owners urged to keep pets on a lead around livestock following latest sheep death

Dog owners are being reminded to keep their pets on a lead around livestock.

It comes after a sheep was found dead in a field in the Caerleebank area of Innerleithen on Monday.

It's believed a dog is responsible for the animal's death.

If so, it would be at least the second sheep-worrying incident in the area in just over a year.

Another sheep was found dead in a similar incident at Caerleebank - just off Peebles Road - on October 14th last year.

The latest attack is thought to have happened sometime between Saturday, November 30th, and Sunday, December 1st.

Police say an investigation has been launched and enquiries are ongoing.

A spokesperson said: "Officers are urging all dog owners to keep their pets on leads when near fields containing livestock.

"It is the dog owner’s responsibility to ensure their dog is on a lead and under control when livestock is present, not doing this is a crime.

"Failing to keep your animal under control can result in a £40,000 or a 12-month prison sentence. The legislation is there to protect livestock from dog attacks and irresponsible dog owners can and will be prosecuted."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 3818 of Monday, December 2nd, or make a call anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
