Homes evacuated in Selkirk after 'suspicious item found during attic clearance'

Police have sealed off streets near the centre of Selkirk this evening (Wednesday).
It follows confirmation a suspicious package was found at a property in Kirk Wynd.
Emergency services swooped on the area after the alarm was raised around 3.20pm, and have begun evacuating residents from their homes.
South Port and neighbouring streets - Back Row and Castle Street - have been taped off.
Locals say the potentially explosive device was found in property, which had been empty, during an attic clearance.
A bomb disposal team arrived on the scene around 6.20pm.
A rest centre has been set up for residents affected at the nearby Victoria Hall.
And the public's being told to avoid the area.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Emergency services are in attendance at Kirk Wynd, Selkirk following a report of a suspicious package being found around 3.20pm.
“A number of properties have been evacuated as a precaution.
“There are also closures in place on surrounding roads and the public is asked to avoid the area if possible.
