An 82-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with a crash in the Scottish Borders, which left two people dead.

It follows a collision on the A7 between Galashiels and Selkirk - near its junction with the B7060 turn-off for Yair - on November the 26th last year.

Walter Tait, from Selkirk, is accused of causing the death of his passenger Janette Tait and another motorist, Henry Holme, by driving dangerously.

It's alleged he was heading south in a blue Ford Fiesta when it crossed onto the opposite side of the road, struck a barrier and drove along a footpath before returning to the northbound carriageway - causing his car to collide with a silver Honda Jazz being driven by Mr Holme.

According to court papers, Mr Holme, who was 90 and from Melrose, and Janette Tait, who was 79 and from Selkirk, were so severely injured in the smash they died.

Mr Tait, from Selkirk, made no plea to the charge when he appeared in private, and on petition, in front of Sheriff Peter Paterson at Selkirk Sheriff Court this afternoon (Tuesday).

He was committed for further examination and released on bail
