A 31-year-old man who admitted attacking a man in Selkirk with a machete has been jailed for 200 days at the town's Sheriff Court.

Ian Monteith, from Edinburgh, lashed out after falling out with his drinking buddy at an address in Bannerfield Drive on April the 23rd.

He struck him with an ornament and punched him on the head and body before leaving the room and returning with the weapon - striking him several times with the flat part of the knife.

The court heard Monteith's victim cut himself in the attack after a sheath protecting the blade came loose during a struggle.

Monteith - described as a prisoner in Edinburgh - appeared in court via a video link, and sentence was backdated to April when he was first remanded in custody in connection with the case.

Imitation firearm

A 33-year-old man has admitted being in possession of an imitation firearm in Galashiels.

Niall Gray, who lives in the town's Talisman Avenue, has also pled guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, by making the pistol-style ball-bearing gun visible and discharging it "in the vicinity of members of the public".

Selkirk Sheriff Court heard the incident happened in Melrose Road, Galashiels, on March the 12th this year.

Sheriff Peter Paterson deferred sentence until next month for background reports, to see if there are any alternatives to custody.

Sex Offenders Register

A 40-year-old man convicted of sexually assaulting a woman at a pub in Melrose has been fined a total of £420 and placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years.

Selkirk Sheriff Court heard Alexander Pringle - who gave an address on the outskirts of Galashiels - placed his hands on her breasts at The Ship Inn on New Year's Day.

In addition to the fine, he was ordered to pay his victim £100 in compensation.

Petition

A 31-year-old woman from Galashiels has appeared in court on drugs charges.

Jasmine Lauder faces two charges of possession of a controlled drug, as well as one charge of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.

She made no plea when she appeared in private, on petition, at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

She was committed for further examination and released on bail.

Speeding fine

A Porshe driver caught speeding on the A68 near Soutra has been fined a total of £540 and had five penalty points added to his licence.

Ian Ramage, from Edinburgh, had been charged with dangerous driving following the incident on April the 20th this year, but pled guilty to a reduced charge of careless driving.

Selkirk Sheriff Court heard the 64-year-old had been clocked by an unmarked police car travelling at an average of 76 miles per hour, in a 60 mile per hour limit.

His solicitor said he had been trying to overtake but was struggling to get back in to the correct lane, so sped up to complete the manoeuvre.
