Flying the flag in honour of Armed Forces Day
Last updated 23rd Jun 2025
As conflicts rage around the world, Scottish Borders Council is flying a flag in honour of the country's Armed Forces.
Lieutenant General John Cooper, who co-ordinated the recent VE Day celebrations in Kelso, carried out the honours during a ceremony at local authority headquarters in Newtown St Boswells.
The event is held annually to mark Armed Forces Day - which this year takes place on Saturday, June 28th - to commemorate the men and women who serve their country.
"It is an honour to raise the Armed Forces Day flag today," he said, "especially in this year when we recognise the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
"This flag symbolises our gratitude and respect for the men and women who serve and have served in our Armed Forces, ensuring our safety and freedom."
Among those in attendance were representatives from the Royal Regiment of Scotland, Armed Forces charity SSAFA and Edinburgh, Lothian & Borders Royal British Legion.
Councillor John Greenwell, the local authority's Champion for Armed Forces and Veterans, said: "I am delighted that Scottish Borders Council is once again supporting Armed Forces Day.
"This is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable contributions made by everyone in the military community, from our currently serving troops to the reservists, veterans, cadets, and of course, the families who support them.
"The support shown by our local communities throughout this week is deeply appreciated. As we come together, we recognise the efforts of all those who work tirelessly to maintain the safety and security of our nation."
