Police have confirmed a pensioner found "unresponsive" near the centre of Peebles has died.

Emergency services raced to the scene in the Dean Park area after the alarm was raised around 2.15am this morning (Saturday).

But the 68-year-old was pronounced dead on their arrival.

A forensic tent was put up on Northgate Vennel while officers probed the incident, and the neighbouring street was sealed off.

But police say there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police received a report of a 68-year-old man found unresponsive on Northgate Vennel on Peebles around 2.15am on Saturday (February 1st).

“Emergency services attended, however the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances, and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
