A 28-year-old man who severely assaulted a six-month-old baby at an address in Peebles has today (Monday) been jailed for three years.

Steven Dailly - who gave an address in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire - was convicted by unanimous verdict following a jury trial at Selkirk Sheriff Court last month.

Police were called to a residential property in the Borders town following an incident on November 11th, 2023.

According to the charge, Dailly - who had blamed alcohol for his behaviour - repeatedly inflicted blunt force trauma to the child's head, by means to the prosecutor unknown, to her severe injury.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Peter Paterson said it was a serious assault on an innocent child.

He pointed out Dailly gave inconsistent accounts of what happened - initially blaming another child, before claiming the baby fell from a pram.

A life-long non-harassment order was also imposed, banning him from any contact with the child's mother.
