Dramatic images capture scale of flooding in Peebles as mop-up operation gets underway
Last updated 24th May 2024
A mop-up operation is underway in Peebles after two days of persistent rain led to flooding overnight.
Part of Crossburn Caravan Park, off Edinburgh Road, had to be evacuated after the Eddleston Water burst its banks.
Lee Potter, who was staying in one of the holiday homes, revealed he became aware of what was happening when he was awoken by police.
Sharing a video of the dramatic scenes online, he added: "Never saw the water as high as this before."
A number of flood warnings remain in place in the Peebles area this morning, although water levels are expected to recede now the rain has eased off.
Motorists with vehicles parked in the town's Cuddyside area were advised to move their cars to higher ground, as river levels rose.
No major damage or injuries have been reported, but the Eddleston Water is believed to have come close to beating the previous high of 1.221 metres set in 2012.
It comes as talks continue around improving flood defences in the town. Community councillors recently heard it's hoped Peebles can secure around 1,000 metres of temporary flood barriers currently being used in Hawick, when its new flood protection scheme is completed.
Paul Spence, from Peebles Resilient Community group, said: "Well, who would have thought we would be putting up pictures at the end of May. All cars have been moved. Water will peak around midnight according to the authorities."
A number of Borderers had earlier got caught up in flooding on the Edinburgh bypass - with Selkirkshire councillor Caroline Cochrane describing the situation as "horrendous".
