Paddleboarder plucked from water during another busy weekend for rescue teams
Last updated 25th Aug 2024
A paddleboarder has had to be rescued from the water after getting into difficulty near the pier at Berwick.
Coastguard teams from both sides of the Scotland-England border were scrambled to the scene after the alarm was raised, shortly before 5pm yesterday (Saturday).
The casualty was recovered by the local lifeboat crew, before being handed over to the care of the North East Ambulance Service.
But it soon emerged a second person had entered the water in an effort to reach the paddleboarder.
They were later located on a nearby beach being assisted by members of the public, before search teams were stood down.
It's prompted a warning from Berwick Coastguard, who state: "We strongly advise that anyone who is enjoying activities on the water should always wear a floatation device and carry a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch to call for help if you need it."
Meanwhile, Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team was called out earlier today (Sunday) to help evacuate an injured mountain biker at Glentress. It's understood it's the sixth callout to the Borders beauty spot in three months.
A spokesperson said: "After a day training near Drumelzier on rigging techniques, we were called by Police Scotland at 3.04pm to assist in the evacuation of a mountain biker at Glentress.
"We were quick on scene as some of the team were just returning from training, and others were already in the forest due to the Enduro event being held there.
"Working with colleagues from Scottish Ambulance Service we were able to assess and package the casualty up for evacuation direct to awaiting ambulance at The Peel. The team was also assisted by event cover medical staff."
