An NHS worker from the Scottish Borders has been suspended after being caught transporting cash for criminals who, a Sheriff said, "create misery across Scotland by pedalling their drugs".

A court heard Brodie Anderson - who is employed as a porter - was paid just over £100 to deliver £5,000 to an address in Kirkintilloch, in East Dunbartonshire, when he was stopped by police on the M8 motorway, near Livingston, in April 2021.

The 28-year-old, from Galashiels, told officers: "There would have been more had it not been for last night" - a reference, the prosecutor said, to a seizure the previous day.

Selkirk Sheriff Court today (Monday) was told Anderson was put under survellience as part of an operation which last year led to Chris Ferguson, also from Galashiels, being jailed for his part in serious organised crime in the Scottish Borders.

Anderson admitted agreeing with Ferguson, and others not known to the prosecutor, to do something that he knew or suspected, or ought to have known or suspected, would enable or further the commission of serious organised crime, in that he did agree with them to obtain, transfer and store quantities of money between various locations and to others.

He committed the offence at addresses in McQueen Gardens, Galashiels; Kirkintilloch in East Dunbartonshire; the M8 and elsewhere between March and April, 2021.

Anderson's solicitor - who described it as a "catastrophic decision" - said his client had been naive, but suspected he wasn't given much of an option when asked to become involved.

Sheriff Donald Ferguson noted Anderson has no previous convictions for similar offences, and has stayed out of trouble since.

He placed him under supervision for nine months and ordered him to complete 225 hours of unpaid work.
