A mop-up operation is underway after a community in the Scottish Borders was hit by flash flooding for the second time in less than two years.

Some homes and businesses in Newtown St Boswells were left under water following a deluge of rain last night (Monday), as thunderstorms swept across the country.

The Co-op was forced to close early as the main B6398 road through the village turned into a boating lake.

But some locals were quick to make the most of it - with last year's Lauder Cornet, Ryan Murray, seen taking to the water in an orange dinghy, while another braved the waves on a paddleboard.

Videos have emerged of a torrent of water running down Sprouston Road, with drone images appearing to show the nearby playpark and bowling club submerged.

One mum shared images of water entering her daughter's home in Sergeants Park, while a table could be seen under water in the back garden.

The area was last hit in December 2023, following a day of persistent rain and melting snow.

Local councillor Leagh Douglas has described the latest scenes as "hugely concerning" - but she's praised emergency teams for their response.

She told Greatest Hits Radio: "I was contacted by a number of Newtown residents about the developing situation. I contacted council colleagues and was relieved to see an emergency response team quickly mobilised.

"The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called out to assist some households affected by the flooding, and my thoughts are with those local residents."
