A 44-year-old man has died after the motorcycle he was riding was involved in a collision with an HGV on the A7 in the Scottish Borders.

Emergency services raced to the scene - just south of Fountainhall - after the alarm was raised around 11.35am on Friday.

Other motorists also stopped to help.

But the Yamaha rider could not be saved. His next of kin have been informed.

Police say the driver of the white Renault truck escaped injury.

The road was closed between Fountainhall and Stow for several hours while crash investigators examined the scene and the wreckage was cleared, but has since reopened.

Officers are now appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Sergeant Barry Sommerville, from Police Scotland, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died and all those involved, and I would like to thank members of the public who stopped to assist.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are appealing to anyone who has not already spoken to officers to get in touch if you can assist.

“If you were driving in the area and have dash-cam footage that could help with our investigation then please contact us.”

Another crash was also reported around the same time, further south on the A7, just north of Ashkirk. The road was blocked for a short time, but police say there are no reports of any injuries.

A fuel spillage on the A702 both ways at Carlops has also led to delays this afternoon.

Anyone who can help with the fatal crash is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1287 of Friday, June 21st, 2024.
