An event which aims to improve the safety of motorcyclists on our region's roads is being held in Galashiels.

The Borders Group of Advanced Motorcyclists (BGAM) is hosting its seventh annual open day at the town's fire station from 10am to 3pm today (Sunday, April 2nd).

Riders are being offered a free 30-minute assessment with a qualified observer to test their skills.

It comes as new stats - released ahead of National Motorcycle Safety Week - show 339 young adults aged 16 to 24 were killed or injured on Scotland's roads between 2018 and 2021.

BGAM secretary Jimmy Wright said: “All the partners involved are keen to reduce the number of incidents involving motorcycles in and around the Scottish Borders.

"One of the ways to achieve this is through education and the ‘Skills for Life’ course which aims to make motorcycle riders become ‘Thinking Riders’ through the continual use of the five elements of motorcycle control: information, position, speed, gear and acceleration.

"We are also heavily involved with the Young Driver Programme (up to 26-year-olds) where they do the training pass the test and get a full refund."
