Man appears in court charged with assault and attempted robbery

A 35-year-old man's appeared in court in the Scottish Borders charged with assault and attempted robbery.
Michael Hartley - of No Fixed Abode - has also been accused of four counts of threatening or abusive behaviour, and a seventh charge of malicious mischief.
He made no plea when he appeared in private at Selkirk Sheriff Court in front of Sheriff Peter Paterson on Thursday.
He was committed for further examination and remanded in custody.
Hartley is expected to appear back in court within the next eight days.
Petition
A 34-year-old man from Hawick has made a private appearance at Selkirk Sheriff Court charged with assault to severe injury.
Lee Johnstone is also accused of breaching the Communications Act and threatening or abusive behaviour.
He made no plea to a total of four charges, was committed for further examination and remanded in custody.
Johnstone is expected to appear back in court within the next eight days.
Careless driving
A 45-year-old man who nearly caused a serious crash while overtaking in the face of oncoming traffic on the A72 is being allowed to keep his licence.
Selkirk Sheriff Court today (Thursday) heard another driver was forced to take evasive action to avoid a collision.
The incident unfolded on a blind bend near Castlecraig, around 3.30pm on June 21st last year.
McLeod's solicitor explained the vehicle in front of his client had been doing 30mph in a 60mph limit, but admitted it was "a bad error of judgement".
McLeod, from Armadale, West Lothian, has been fined a total of £740 pounds and had seven penalty points added to his licence.
Compensation
A 33-year-old woman who stole a bottle of wine from Home Bargains in Galashiels told a member of staff who challenged her: "If you touch me, I'll get my f***ing boyfriend onto you!"
Selkirk Sheriff Court heard Kendra Morris appeared to be under the influence of alcohol when she entered the store around 4pm on July 9th last year.
And a member of store staff instructed that she should not to be served.
But Morris was seen to put the bottle in her bag and, when challenged, began shouting and swearing and threatened the member of store staff - adding: "I'm not f***ing giving it back."
Morris pled guilty to charges of theft and threatening or abusive behaviour.
Her solicitor, Mat Patrick, said his client is seeking help for her behaviour.
Sheriff Peter Paterson fined Morris a total of £520 and ordered her to pay the shop worker £100 in compensation.
