The sun is continuing to shine on the Borders common riding season.

Children as young as two were among 86 riders taking part in Melrose Festival's Junior Rideout last night (Monday).

They were led round town by this year's Melrosian Robin Sharp, who presented everyone who took part with a medal.

He told Greatest Hits Radio: "It's really good to see all the young ones out on a nice night, and the start of the Festival in the coming weeks."

When asked what the last year has been like for him, following his appointment, he added: "Just a whirlwind! But it's great to see all the different towns' festivities and then welcome them here to show them our traditions."

The latest addition to the Melrose Festival is part of a series of events celebrating the town's history.

But, according to chairman Rob Moffat, the number of children who joined the cavalcade shows the Borders common ridings, and summer festivals, have a promising future.

"We started the Junior Rideout two years ago," he explained. "Basically we want to try to get the tradition of horse riding earlier and earlier. The (Melrosians) Rideout has gone 60 years now, which is great - but we want it to get better and better."
