Police say they're treating the death of a 49-year-old woman in Melrose as "unexplained".

Officers swooped on a block of flats in the town's Eildon Crescent after the alarm was raised around 3pm on Wednesday (August 2nd).

The resident of the property has been named locally. One neighbour described her as a "lovely" woman, and said he is in shock at her sudden death.

He added: "It was a quiet area until this happened, and it's been non-stop with police and ambulances coming back and forth ever since."

Officers remain on guard at the Eildon Housing Association-owned building - which sits opposite a children's play area - this evening (Friday). And friends and neighbours have left floral tributes outside.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and Police Scotland say a "significant police presence" will remain in the area.

But they've been unable to confirm whether they are looking for anyone else in connection with the woman's death.

“A post mortem will be carried out in due course to establish the exact cause of death.

“There will be a significant police presence in the area as officers carry out enquiries.”
