Marks and Spencer was forced to close its food store in Galashiels earlier - after a campervan drove into it.

The front of the vehicle was crushed in the collision with the building's wall at the Gala Water Retail Park around 12.30pm this afternoon (Friday).

An area at the front of the store was sealed off while engineers assessed the damage and the area was made safe.

Long queues of traffic formed as staff redirected customers, but the store reopened at 4pm.

A spokesperson for M&S - whose first slogan was 'Don't ask the price, it's a penny' - said: "Due to an incident out of our control, we are temporarily closing the store until further notice.

"Sorry for the inconvenience caused at this time we will update when we can open the store again."

Later they added: "Thank you for your cooperation. The store has been assessed by engineers and is safe to open to the public again!"

It's unclear exactly what happened, but police say no-one has been charged in connection with the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a van having struck a building at Gala Water Retail Park in Galashiels around 12.25pm on Friday, May 5th.

“There were no reported injuries.”
