The family of an 84-year-old woman found dead at a property in Galashiels are today paying tribute to her - as a man appears in court charged with her murder.

Emergency services swooped on an address in the town's Wood Street around 3am yesterday (Monday) morning.

But Margaret Maude Hanson was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement, released through Police Scotland, her family said: "We are devastated at the loss of our mum and gran.

"Margaret will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

"We would ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

An 84-year-old man has been arrested in connection with her death and appeared at Selkirk Sheriff Court this afternoon.

John Hanson has been charged with Margaret's murder.

He made no plea when he appeared in private and on petition.

John Hanson - understood to be Margaret's husband - was committed for further examination and remanded in custody.

He is due to appear in court again within the next eight days.
