It was famed for its food and seafront location.

But there's shock tonight (Sunday) after one of the Borders best known fish and chip shops announced it has ceased operation.

Mackays of Eyemouth, which was based in the town's High Street, has released a statement saying it is "time to take a break" and thanking all its "valued customers and suppliers" for their support.

It reads: "It is with a heavy heart that this post is to confirm that as of today, Mackays of Eyemouth, has ceased to be in operation.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of the customers who have come from far and near over the years - your business has been very much appreciated.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my team who have been by my side through everything, it's been a rollercoaster that's for sure!"

The statement, which is signed by current owner Joanne Patterson, comes less than two years after the award-winning restaurant announced the loss of John Mackay to cancer.

It continues: "At this moment in time, the chip van will also be off the road until I evaluate what the future holds - I know this will be a disappointment to our regulars in Duns, Coldstream and Kelso.

"I'll miss your cheery faces and endless banter but, at this time, I need to take stock for my own personal well-being.

"It's now time to take a break and reflect on what has been a difficult and emotional couple of years and think about what's next."

Customers have been quick to react, and pass on their best wishes. One said: "What a shock. What a massive loss."

Another added: "Sad news for Eyemouth."

A third said: "Gutted. We travelled regularly from Fife to eat your amazing food and have repeatedly said your fish is the best we’ve ever had. Best of luck to you and all your staff."

Another added: "I’m so sad to be reading this. We travel from Newcastle for fish and chips. I wish you all the best for the future."
