A 26-year-old man has been remanded in custody in connection with a series of thefts and housebreakings across the Lothians and Borders.

It follows incidents in Galashiels, Selkirk, Stow, and elsewhere over the last seven weeks.

Nathan Elliot - who gave an address in Midlothian - has been charged with a total of 27 offences, including 13 house-breakings, or attempted housebreakings, and seven thefts of a motor vehicle.

He has also been accused of various driving offences, including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and failing to stop for police.

Elliot made no plea during a private appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today (Tuesday), and has been committed for further examination.

He is due to appear in court again within the next eight days, and he's been locked up meantime.

Detective Inspector Debbie Duncan, of Police Scotland, said: “Crimes of this nature have a serious impact on the victims, causing them to question the safety and security of their own homes, and I would like to commend the work of the officers investigating this crime series.

“I would also like to thank the various local communities for their assistance with our enquiries to date and reassure the public that any reports of criminality will be investigated thoroughly by Police Scotland.”
