Stars 'spotted' on Holy Island as Lindisfarne Castle closes for filming
Last updated 23rd May 2024
The National Trust has announced Lindisfarne Castle is closed to the public today (Thursday) due to filming.
Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle has been pictured on the Holy Island in recent weeks shooting scenes for his latest movie - 28 Years Later.
A visitor to the Northumberland beauty spot on Tuesday reported seeing Cillian Murphy, who starred in 28 Days Later - the original movie in the zombie franchise - with fellow actor Ralph Fiennes, although that's not been confirmed.
Greatest Hits Radio understands a number of runners from the Borders volunteered to be extras in the production, after a casting agency issued an appeal for people with "lean strong physiques".
Another visitor said: "Was there on Monday late afternoon and was definitely 28 (Years) Later. The local hotel were buzzing at the thought of some movie stars potentially staying there."
Earlier this month an area near the castle, known as the Lime Kilns, was sealed off for filming.
Photographer Russell Emmerson shared snaps of what he described as "a new build post Apocalyptic cabin being built and rigged with gas pipes for a staged fire".
28 Years Later - also set to star Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer - is expected to hit cinema screens in June next year.
It's the latest in a series of big budget productions being shot in our region in recent times.
Three years ago, Harrison Ford was at Bamburgh Castle, further down the coast, to shoot scenes for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which also featured the Leaderfoot Viaduct near Melrose.
And Richard E Grant was at the Borders beauty spot earlier this month to film scenes for new HBO series The Franchise, which wrapped up this week.
