Borders village's floral displays named among best in Britain

Council budgets for floral displays may have been pruned back in recent years.
But the efforts of volunteers who dedicate their time to sprucing up one Borders community are being recognised.
Lauder in Bloom has reached the finals of the annual Britain in Bloom competition, where it will go up against seven other places in the Large Village category.
Judges will visit all the areas - including the Royal Burgh - over the summer, before announcing the winners in the autumn.
The other finalists in the Large Village catergory are: Great Coates in Bloom (Lincolnshire); Floral Forest (Guernsey); Holywell in Bloom (Northumberland); Cannington in Bloom (Somerset); Cullybackey Community Partnership (Ulster); Saundersfoot in Bloom (Wales); and Roberttown in Bloom (Yorkshire).

Kay Clark, Community Development Manager at the Royal Horticultural Society, said: “While planting trends may change and environmental practices evolve, the belief that plants and communal green spaces are important for creating healthy and happy communities endures.
"Britain in Bloom groups across the UK work to enhance the local environment, share skills and knowledge, and create opportunities to improve local wellbeing. In this special anniversary year, we’ve chosen the theme of friendship, to highlight the way in which community gardening can bring people together and enrich lives.”
