Lauder Cornet Ryan Murray is riding high after leading the town's annual Common Riding.

And then revealed he might have done it years ago - if he wasn't "petrified" of horses!

The 31-year-old dad-of-three, who works as a landscape gardener, was supported by his Lass, Lara Tice.

And crowds of well-wishers lined the streets to show their support.

"It's been amazing," Ryan told Greatest Hits Radio after leading a cavalcade of 210 horses on a ceremonial ride round the boundaries of the town.

He was following in the footsteps of his great grandfather who took on the role 65 years ago. And he had Right Hand Man Jake Mirley (Cornet 2023) and Left Hand Man Elliot Balson (Cornet 2022) by his side.

"I always loved the thought of being Cornet, but I was always petrified of horses," he smiled.

"It's an absolute honour to represent Lauder in this year's Common Riding having followed it for many years.

"I wish I had done it younger, but I've done it now and it's going to be with me the rest of my life."

Representatives from other Borders festivals joined the celebrations both on foot and horseback, as the end of a summer of festivities nears.

Among those waiting to greet the Cornet at the Waterin' Stane - where 38 ex-Cornets gathered to sing Bonnie Lauderdale - was Ross Ker.

He led the festivities in 1980 and says the day brings back fond memories.

"It's very important to the Border towns," he added. "All the Border towns have got a wee bit something special, and we must keep these traditions going."
